The Montessori Methodology, developed by Dr. Maria Montessori, is a child-centered educational approach based on scientific observations of children from birth to adulthood. Dr. Montessori’s Method has been time tested, with over 100 years of success in diverse cultures throughout the world. The objectives of Teacher Professional Development Center are to uphold, propagate and further the pedagogical principles and practice formulated by Dr. Maria Montessori, to ensure the independence of the child’s personality through successive stages of growth until he reaches full normal development by means of his own activity; to gather information regarding children and Montessori practice from all corners of the world to stay abreast of the latest theories.
On the basis of more than 20 years’ Montessori education of WIEG, Teacher Professional Development Center is dedicated to researching the integration of Montessori and Chinese culture; to reaching scientists, researchers and universities throughout China to establish a managerial system and educational standard catering to Montessori scientific pedagogy as well as local requirements; to furthering the development of Montessori educational philosophy and practices; to promoting the development of the whole child—physical, social, emotional, cognitive, and global peace through the application of Montessori principles.
Montessori philosophy has been in existence for over 100 years. It is a vigorous and scientific pedagogy being passed through and enriched by the educators from every corners of the world.
From the early 1990s, the Chinese educators has put forward and been working on the “localization of Montessori Education”. One of our objectives is to provide Montessori educators the guiding principles of daily work, and a panel to carry out educational practices and research.
One of the hallmarks of Montessori Education is that it regards the child as one who is naturally eager for knowledge and capable of initiating learning in a supportive, thoughtfully prepared learning environment. A prepared environment means a prepared teacher who is sensitive to the development stages of children and prepares suitable materials to meet their needs.
Appropriately prepared teachers and environment are the foundation of Montessori education. Another objective of Teacher Professional Development Center is to develop teaching standards, manuals and teaching materials suitable for Chinese culture and present times. We are striving to providing a framework of guidelines to regulate the behaviors of educators; to creating a platform to promote the exchange of ideas, perspectives and practices between and amongst all those interested in Montessori education; to giving directions on the preparation of classroom environment.
Although every owners, leaders, academic administrators, faculty, and practitioners of the educational institutes would like to promote the development of whole children, problems arise from time to time because of the differences on educational recognition and resources, social background, educational experience, etc. Just like fish in water, it is hard for the educational institutes to find the problem by themselves, or to solve those problems.
Our objective is to provide a comprehensive support system for Montessori schools and institutions, to evaluate them and ensure that they adhere to Montessori principles with authenticity, integrity and completeness, to promote the capability of teachers, and help them build a self-development and self-perfection system.
